EXCLUSIVE: Players Reject ‘Absurd’ NRL Rule Trial Amid Rising Tension Between RLPA and Management

The NRL’s introduction of a controversial trial sin bin rule has intensified tensions with the Rugby League Players Association (RLPA). This new rule allows for players guilty of high tackles to be sin-binned up to 15 minutes after the incident, contingent on the outcome of a head injury assessment for the tackled player. If a player fails this test, the offending player will then face a temporary suspension. Referees still retain the authority to send players off immediately for foul play.

Parramatta forward Shaun Lane, part of the RLPA’s advisory group, expressed strong disapproval of the trial, labelling it “silly.” He highlighted the absurdity of delaying disciplinary action while the game’s dynamics could be heavily influenced by the foul player in the meantime. Lane noted the RLPA’s frustration over the NRL’s reluctance to consider suggestions, such as the activation of an 18th man when a player is ruled out.

The RLPA’s ongoing struggles with NRL management, particularly concerning engagement and consultation on new rules, have been underscored by past disputes, including a season-long media boycott linked to collective bargaining disagreements. This evolving dynamic reflects a growing clash between player welfare considerations and league governance, with the RLPA questioning the NRL’s commitment to collaborative decision-making.
