Bulldogs fans seeking clarity on Samuel Hughes’ prolonged absence this season have received insights from Phil Gould, the club’s general manager of football. Initially slated to play against the Dragons in the season opener, Hughes, 24, was unexpectedly ruled out due to an ankle injury, with hopes for a swift recovery. However, he has remained sidelined since then, and details regarding his return were unclear.
During a recent episode of Six Tackles With Gus on Wide World of Sports, Gould explained that Hughes sustained an ankle injury during the second trial of the year. Despite participating in training leading up to the first match, he was ultimately ruled out as he was still limping. Further examinations revealed the extent of the injury required surgical intervention for a syndesmosis issue.
Gould noted that Hughes has experienced several setbacks during his rehabilitation, which is not uncommon for such injuries. What was initially anticipated as a one to two-week recovery period has now extended, with current projections suggesting he may return by round 12. At this point, Hughes is still not fit to play, but his return would be a significant boost for the Bulldogs, especially with multiple forwards currently unavailable.
Last year, Hughes showcased his potential, averaging 83 run metres and 21 tackles per game, making him a valuable asset for the Belmore-based team. As the Bulldogs approach Magic Round, they will be missing several key forwards due to suspensions, including Sitili Tupouniua and Josh Curran, highlighting the club’s pressing need for Hughes’ skills on the field.
