Phil Gould has suggested that Tom Trbojevic’s recent performance in round 10 has raised concerns for NSW Blues coach Laurie Daley, particularly regarding his selection for the upcoming State of Origin I. With Dylan Edwards expected to secure the fullback position, Trbojevic is competing for a place in the centres or on the wing. Leading candidates for centre positions are Stephen Crichton and Latrell Mitchell, which leaves Trbojevic in a tight race against Brian To’o, Jacob Kiraz, and Zac Lomax for the remaining spots.

After missing three games earlier this season due to a knee injury sustained against the Eels, Trbojevic returned to play against the Panthers but has been under scrutiny for not being at peak fitness. Despite running 206 metres in a recent match against the Sharks, his performance was deemed below his usual standard, further complicating his bid for selection.

Gould commented that this lacklustre showing might jeopardise Trbojevic’s chances of making the team, stating that coach Daley may have tentatively considered him for the wing position, a decision he personally disagrees with. He emphasised that while Trbojevic is undoubtedly talented, playing wing at such a high level requires consistent form. Gould expressed a preference for specialist players in that position and indicated that Trbojevic would need to demonstrate significant improvement this week to regain the coach’s confidence.

Additionally, potential fullback candidates also include Ryan Papenhuyzen and James Tedesco, though Gould speculated that Lomax would likely be chosen, alongside To’o, provided he can demonstrate his fitness.

Manly is set to play against the Cowboys on Saturday, an important fixture for Trbojevic to show his capabilities ahead of the critical selection for the Origin series.
