Phil Gould has recommended that the Sydney Roosters reconsider their expectations following a series of disappointing recruitment outcomes. With Trent Robinson facing his greatest challenge as coach, the club has seen a wave of significant player departures, including Luke Keary, Jared Waerea-Hargreaves, and Joseph Manu, while the mysterious release of Terrell May added to the tumult.
The Roosters, once known for their aggressive spending, are now grappling with missed opportunities in the player market, including failed bids for David Fifita and Ben Hunt. Gould noted a need for the club to adapt, emphasising the importance of transitioning towards nurturing young talent. He suggested this may require lower immediate expectations for success while fostering the development of promising players like Robert Toia, De La Salle Va’a, and Blake Steep, who are vying for spots in the team ahead of the upcoming season opener against the Broncos.
Acknowledging the Roosters’ proud history of winning and their distaste for backwards steps, Gould believes that embracing a rebuilding phase could ultimately lead to a more sustainable future. He urged the club to appreciate the young players currently in the system rather than focusing solely on marquee signings.
