Mitch Barnett, the 31-year-old co-captain of the Warriors, exemplifies the journey to leadership in rugby league, showcasing that it isn’t achieved overnight. His gradual ascent has seen him represent both the NSW Blues and the Kangaroos after making his debut in these formats last year.
Barnett’s early career with the Newcastle Knights and brief stint at the Raiders was marked by his competitive spirit, yet he often crossed the line with his aggressive play. A pivotal moment came three years ago when he received a six-week ban for a dangerous incident in a match against the Panthers, an act he now labels “thuggish.” However, he expressed relief that it occurred during a formative period in his career, helping him mature as both a player and leader.
After seven seasons with the Knights, Barnett transferred to the Warriors at the end of 2022, where he quickly blossomed into a pivotal player and a positive influence within the squad. He reflected on his growth, recognising that being thrust into a leadership role too early at Newcastle may not have suited him at the time. But since arriving in New Zealand, he has embraced this responsibility and relished the opportunity to express himself on the field.
Barnett has revealed that during his time at the Knights, coach Nathan Brown envisioned him as a future leader and encouraged him to step into that role. His recent experiences have allowed him to focus on performing his best for the Warriors while navigating his leadership position with a newfound maturity. He credits his teammates, particularly James Fisher-Harris and Kurt Capewell, for supporting him in this journey.
Over the last two years, Barnett’s on-field performance has been impressive, averaging substantial run metres and tackles per game. His contributions, alongside emerging players like Luke Metcalf and Leka Halasima, have propelled the Warriors into contention for finals, contrary to expectations.
Looking ahead, Barnett is poised to start for the Blues in an upcoming Origin opener, a challenge he embraces. He aims to replicate the successful partnership he shared with his Warriors teammate Addin Fonua-Blake by forming a formidable duo with state representative Payne Haas. Although he acknowledges the significance of this opportunity, he remains focused on his performance and the team’s success.
As Barnett steps into this new season of leadership, he embraces the unpredictability and excitement it brings, eagerly anticipating the journey ahead. With a blend of experience, resilience, and growing confidence, he is ready to lead, inspire, and contribute meaningfully to the game, aware that the ultimate test lies in matching his efforts on the field.
