Former Queensland captains Wally Lewis and Darren Lockyer have expressed support for Cameron Munster as he steps up as the new skipper for the upcoming State of Origin II in Perth. Munster was chosen over other NRL club captains including Harry Grant, Tino Fa’asuamaleaui, and Kalyn Ponga, following the axing of Daly Cherry-Evans.

Coach Billy Slater’s decision is noteworthy, particularly given Munster’s troubled history off the field, including being removed from a Kangaroos camp in 2017 for a conflict with teammate Ben Hunt and previously being benched from Melbourne Storm’s leadership group due to involvement in a white powder scandal in 2021. Lockyer believes this new responsibility will necessitate immediate changes in Munster’s behaviour, especially in how he conducts himself at training. He stated that while Munster should maintain his performance style, he needs to lead with both actions and words, influencing his team positively during preparations for matches.

Lockyer emphasised the significance of leadership and the need for Munster to inspire his teammates, particularly as captains often feel a deeper desire to secure victory due to the added responsibility they bear. Lewis also articulated faith in Munster’s inherent qualities, mentioning his competitive spirit and how he has been a standout player in the Maroons’ history, having received the prestigious Wally Lewis Medal in 2020. He encouraged Munster to stay true to his game while still being prepared to make impactful decisions when necessary.

Displaying a sense of pride and emotion upon being nominated by Slater, Munster acknowledged the personal significance of captaining his state, despite the transition coming at the expense of his good friend Cherry-Evans. The Maroons face an uphill battle to keep the series alive after losing the first game at Suncorp Stadium and are set to confront the challenge head-on in Perth.

As he embarks on this pivotal role, Munster’s ability to rise to the occasion will undoubtedly be key not only to his individual success but also to the collective goals of the Queensland team.
