Simon Hull, father and coach of Australian middle-distance runner Jessica Hull, has publicly acknowledged his inappropriate reaction to her fall during the 1500-metre final at the national athletics championships. Following the incident, he reached out to the national federation to express his apologies.

Jessica Hull had set herself the remarkable challenge of clinching titles in the 800m, 1500m, and 5000m at Sydney Olympic Park—a level of achievement that had never been accomplished by any athlete in Australia. Unfortunately, her hopes were dashed on Friday when she was knocked to the ground by competitor Claudia Hollingsworth. Although Hollingsworth initially won the race, she was disqualified; however, her disqualification was later overturned after a two-hour appeal hearing.

As Jessica regained her footing and continued the race, Simon’s frustration boiled over. He vehemently protested from the stands, declaring, “Jess was robbed,” which led to a prolonged outburst that lasted around 15 minutes.

In reflection, Simon admitted he could have handled the situation with greater composure, stating, “I could have been a lot better. I could have been a lot calmer.” He expressed concern for his influence on young spectators, as he values his role in the sport and the importance of setting a positive example. He emphasised that his outburst was not typical of his character.

Despite his earlier emotional response, Simon reaffirmed his belief that Jessica was unfairly denied her opportunity to excel in the championships. He described how the racing incident robbed Jessica of a historic chance, elaborating that he believed she was on track to succeed in all three events.

Simon has since reached out to the Australian Athletics high-performance department to apologise for causing a scene during the event. Contrary to swirling rumours about tensions between the Hull camp and the national athletics body, both parties have insisted that no rift exists.

After securing victory in the 5000m, Jessica addressed the overturned disqualification, noting the initial ruling was based on incidental contact yet did not reference the alleged leg clipping that caused her fall. While Hollingsworth has been named to the Commonwealth Games team, Jessica has not yet secured automatic qualification but expects to be selected.

Reflecting on the turmoil from the 1500m final, Simon stated, “When you’re denied an opportunity to win through no fault of your own, it’s very difficult to take.” He underscored the importance of ensuring a fair competition for all athletes, lamenting that the experience had marred what could have been a remarkable weekend for Jessica.
