Young back-rower Brian Pouniu, regarded as one of Australia’s most promising junior talents, has decided to stay loyal to the Dolphins, refusing significant offers from rival clubs. The 17-year-old, who is part of the Queensland Maroons’ under-19 emerging squad, is expected to re-sign with the Redcliffe club in the coming weeks on a two to three-year deal.

Currently under contract until the end of this year, Pouniu will initially return as a development player before stepping into the Dolphins’ top 30 by the end of the agreement, according to sources. His impressive track record includes being named on News Corp’s 2023 list of the top 30 young talents in Queensland.

In 2024, he showcased his leadership skills by captaining the Dolphins to a 24-10 victory over the Townsville Blackhawks in the Cyril Connell Cup, an under-16 state competition run by the Queensland Rugby League (QRL). Recently, he participated in the grand final of the Mal Meninga Cup, an under-18 QRL contest, where the Dolphins narrowly lost 18-14 to the Burleigh Bears.

Just before turning 18 in October, Pouniu is known for his exceptional work ethic and rugby league intelligence. He has demonstrated versatility in his playing positions, excelling as a second-rower, lock, and centre throughout his development. Outside of football, he is also a high achiever academically, serving as school captain at St Eugene College in Burpengary and performing well in Year 12.

If Pouniu signs a three-year contract, he will remain with the Dolphins until 2028, a period that will see the NRL expand to a 19-team competition with the inclusion of the Perth Bears and a Papua New Guinean franchise.
