Selwyn Cobbo’s recent transfer from the Brisbane Broncos to the Dolphins has stirred the waters in the NRL, particularly for Red Hill icon Darren Lockyer, who expressed concerns over the shift. The 23-year-old Cobbo, who has made six appearances for Queensland in State of Origin, has signed a one-year contract with the Dolphins, following a rejected offer from Brisbane that was reportedly less than half of his existing salary, at around $300,000.
Despite not featuring for the Broncos since round 13, Cobbo has been reinstated to the squad this week as some players are away for Origin commitments. He will soon join a formidable Dolphins backline, which boasts talents like halfback Isaiya Katoa, fullback Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow, and centre Herbie Farnworth. Lockyer acknowledged this team as the league’s most dynamic attacking force and expressed trepidation at the potential synergy between Cobbo and these elite players, especially looking ahead to the 2026 season.
Lockyer commented on Cobbo’s transition, suggesting that joining the Dolphins might alleviate some pressure for the young star. He noted that the move presents Cobbo with an opportunity to prove himself, especially with coach Michael Maguire having previously kept him out of the Broncos’ lineup. Lockyer hopes that Cobbo will reap the rewards of his hard work during this season with the Dolphins.
