Speculation is rife regarding Daly Cherry-Evans’ next move after his recent announcement on Nine’s 100% Footy that he will be leaving the Sea Eagles. The veteran halfback, at 36, hinted that retirement is not entirely off the table but is likely to continue playing with a different NRL club.

Prominent clubs such as the Roosters and Dragons have been mentioned as potential destinations. However, a return to Queensland might be plausible, particularly with the Gold Coast Titans emerging as a strong contender due to Cherry-Evans’ past relationship with coach Des Hasler. Darren Lockyer, a league legend and Broncos director, noted that while Cherry-Evans has a history with the Titans, his connection to Hasler could influence his decision.

Lockyer highlighted that the Titans have already expressed interest and have the salary cap flexibility to secure Cherry-Evans. He also pointed out that the Dolphins could be in the mix, but favoured the Titans due to their established rapport. Cherry-Evans previously caused controversy a decade back when he reneged on a proposed move to Gold Coast, facing backlash from fans across Queensland. However, since re-establishing his credentials with the Maroons, he has solidified his reputation.

The Roosters are also seen as serious contenders for his signature, presenting an opportunity reminiscent of Cooper Cronk’s pivotal role at the club. Lockyer suggested that Cherry-Evans could be an ideal fit for the Roosters, particularly with their current roster dynamics, and indicated there may have been early discussions about a potential deal, given the club’s recent manoeuvring to clear cap space.

While Sandon Smith is marked as the long-term partner for Sam Walker in the Roosters’ halves, the club’s history of signing star players on short-term contracts, as seen with Cronk in 2018, suggests they may be looking to make a bold move once again. The intrigue surrounding Cherry-Evans’ next chapter intensifies as the open market begins, and the situation remains fluid as clubs strategise for the upcoming season.

As the speculation unfolds, Cherry-Evans’ future promises to capture the attention of NRL fans and analysts alike, with numerous factors likely influencing his final decision on where to ply his trade next season.
