In response to a controversial video of Reece Walsh, a concussion specialist has sharply critiqued the Broncos and the NRL for their inadequate response to serious head injury awareness. Dr Alan Pearce, a neurophysiologist from Melbourne, believes the league must intensify its educational efforts regarding the ramifications of brain injuries, especially since Walsh’s actions could inspire imitation among young fans. Pearce expressed his disappointment, especially considering Walsh’s past experiences with concussions, suggesting a troubling lack of awareness about the severity of such injuries.

Former rugby league great Wally Lewis, diagnosed with chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) in 2023, echoed these concerns, labelling Walsh’s behaviour as “extremely unusual” and harmful to the aspirations of young athletes. Lewis has advocated for increased government funding for health research and support for former players suffering from CTE.

Walsh posted a now-deleted TikTok video of himself playfully punching a mate, which sparked outrage. Though he later described the video as a “joke,” Pearce found it staggering that Walsh would engage in such actions, given his own concussion history. He urged the NRL and clubs to acknowledge and educate the sporting community more vigorously about the seriousness of brain injuries.

The Broncos released a statement indicating they met with Walsh, who apologised for his actions, yet critics, including Pearce, noted the absence of any mention of head injury dangers in their response. Pearce questioned why the club did not outright condemn such dangerous behaviour that might have lasting effects on a player’s health.

Additionally, Walsh’s substantial popularity, with nearly 529,000 Instagram followers, means young fans look up to him, presenting a risk of them emulating his behaviour. Pearce stressed that professional athletes have a responsibility to act as role models, rather than merely engaging in reckless antics with their peers.

In anticipation of an upcoming match against the Titans, Walsh plans to donate to the Black Dog Institute, but Pearce suggested he should also contribute to a concussion fund. The NRL’s silence on this incident is perceived as tacit approval, a situation Pearce hopes will change as education about concussion risks is crucial for future generations of players.

Lewis, while critiquing Walsh’s decisions, acknowledged the youthful indiscretions all athletes experience but underscored the negative impact such incidents can have on how rugby league is perceived by aspiring young athletes.
