Cameron Myers, an 18-year-old Australian running prodigy, has set a new under-20 world record for the mile, clocking 3:47.48 at the Wanamaker Mile during the Millrose Games in New York City. This remarkable time not only breaks the previous indoor record held by Kenyan Reynold Cheruiyot but also places Myers fourth on the all-time list for indoor mile times across all ages. Winning the race was American Yared Nuguse, who established a new indoor mile world record.
Myers’ manager, James Templeton, took a jab at Peter Hamilton, the chairman of selectors for Australian Athletics, who did not include Myers in the Olympic team for the 1500m. Templeton expressed confidence that Myers’ achievements would compel selectors to reconsider his status this year.
Despite fierce competition, Myers secured third place and has now qualified for the forthcoming world championships. His performance also dethroned Oliver Hoare’s Australian indoor mile record and matched the national mile record. Myers aims to establish himself further on the international stage, inspired by his recent success and his coach’s encouragement. Meanwhile, fellow Australian Ky Robinson also showcased his talent by breaking the national indoor 3000m record at the same event.
