Former Broncos assistant coach Ben Te’o is being considered for a return to the Dolphins amid rising pressure on head coach Kristian Woolf. This follows the Dolphins’ disappointing 52-18 defeat to the Sea Eagles, a performance that prompted Broncos legend Sam Thaiday to suggest that Te’o could help address the team’s defensive issues.

Last season, although the Dolphins finished ninth, they were notable for their high-scoring ability, amassing 721 points—41 points more than the Broncos, who ultimately won the premiership. However, the Dolphins struggled defensively, conceding 596 points and leaving them with a negative points differential of 125. In contrast, the Broncos only allowed 508 points, achieving a much healthier differential of 172.

After five rounds in the current season, the Dolphins have managed to score 116 points but have also leaked 142, while the leading Panthers boast a staggering points difference of 150. Thaiday speculated on Wide World of Sports’ QLDer that Te’o’s defensive expertise could be a much-needed asset for the team, stating that while the Dolphins can attack effectively, their defensive shortcomings need urgent attention.

Te’o has previous experience with the Dolphins’ Queensland Cup team before his stint as an assistant at the Broncos. When Te’o left the Broncos, Coach Woolf expressed interest in bringing him back, given their history of working together at the Broncos during Te’o’s playing days.

Thaiday reflected on the Dolphins’ recent performance against the Sea Eagles, characterising it as a disorientated display akin to that of inexperienced players losing their composure. He emphasised that the benchmark for the Dolphins this season should be making the finals, highlighting the potential within their roster.

Despite a promising victory against the Sharks and a competitive display against the Broncos, their recent loss at home has left fans disappointed. The Dolphins currently sit 13th on the ladder and have a week off to regroup before facing the Panthers in Darwin. Their upcoming schedule poses further challenges, with trips to Wellington to play the Warriors and home matches against the Storm and Bulldogs.

As pressure mounts, the call for Te’o’s return underscores a pivotal moment for the Dolphins as they seek to improve their defensive game and fulfil their potential this season.
