Brad Fittler has explained his decision to step back from the race for the vacant Kangaroos coaching position following Mal Meninga’s move to the Perth Bears. As one of the frontrunners for the role, Fittler revealed in an exclusive interview with Wide World of Sports that he chose to prioritise his media commitments.
He expressed that while he appreciated being considered for the coaching role, his responsibilities with Channel 9 and the NRL were significant, and he was enjoying those commitments. Fittler candidly shared that he “agonised” over his choice but felt it was the best decision for him at this time. He recognised the magnitude of the Kangaroos’ coaching job, which involves extensive planning for logistics like accommodation, training fields, and equipment, describing it as an incredible opportunity for the right person who can dedicate the necessary time.
Reflecting on his experience, Fittler noted that balancing his media work with his coaching responsibilities for the NSW Blues became challenging. He admitted that the dual roles led to uncomfortable situations, such as discussing players in commentary only to have to select them for the team later, which he found to be ethically complex.
While he’s stepping back now, Fittler remains open to a coaching role in the future, stating that he has not closed that door. He also mentioned that other candidates, including Cameron Smith and Kevin Walters, would excel in the role. As Australia prepares for an upcoming Ashes series against England, Fittler’s legacy includes leading the Blues to Origin series victories in 2018, 2019, and 2021.
