Melbourne Storm icon Billy Slater has praised Wigan Warriors five-eighth Bevan French, describing him as a “wonderful player” who could greatly benefit an NRL club seeking to bring him back to Australia. However, Slater noted that French is under contract with Wigan until the end of 2028 and seems quite content in England.
Interest in French’s potential return to the NRL has resurfaced following an impressive performance against Warrington Wolves in Las Vegas, where he was named man of the match after scoring a try, assisting another, and achieving three line breaks, contributing to Wigan’s 48-24 victory.
Reflecting on French’s journey, Slater highlighted his transition from the Parramatta Eels to Wigan, where he has flourished. He mentioned that the Super League has a different style of play that focuses more on attacking, and despite varied team quality, French’s abilities shine through. He has consistently impressed in recent World Club Challenges, particularly against teams like the Penrith Panthers.
In addition to his recent accolade, French was also awarded the Man of Steel in 2023, joining the ranks of previous winners such as Jamie Lyon and Ben Barba. In the 2022 season, he achieved a remarkable 31 tries from just 24 matches.
Having previously played 47 NRL games for the Eels as a winger and fullback, French has established himself as an elite playmaker in the Super League. Slater expressed that if NRL clubs were keen on signing him, he would undoubtedly add value to their squads; however, he believes French is happy and well-settled with the Warriors.
French hails from Tingha in New South Wales and is related to notable figures in rugby league, including 2001 Dally M Medal winner Preston Campbell and former try-scoring star Nathan Blacklock. His talents and performance continue to garner attention, but for now, it seems he remains firmly entrenched in the Super League.
