Under the guidance of new head coach Jason Ryles, the Parramatta Eels faced a challenging start to the season, suffering a heavy defeat to the Melbourne Storm, with a score of 56-18 in their opening match at AAMI Park. The Eels had a disastrous first half, conceding 46 points, yet they displayed some improvement in the second half, hinting at potential despite missing several key players.

Ryles took over a team that hasn’t seen playoff action for two consecutive seasons, following a grand final appearance in 2022. The absence of captain Mitchell Moses, along with injured stars like Josh Addo-Carr, Shaun Lane, and Ryan Matterson, added to the team’s woes. To complicate matters further, five-eighth Dylan Brown has announced his transfer to the Newcastle Knights, leaving Parramatta in search of a long-term partner for Moses.

Despite the grim defeat, former player Billy Slater observed “positive signs” during the game, urging fans to support Ryles in what will likely be a lengthy process of revitalisation. Slater emphasised the importance of Ryles’ long-term vision for the team, noting that immediate fixes are unrealistic given the club’s current trajectory. The Eels need to rebuild their foundation to regain consistency and aim for finals contention.

Ryles, who previously served as an assistant coach for the Melbourne Storm and Sydney Roosters, now faces the formidable task of restructuring the squad. His prior affiliations with successful teams suggest he brings valuable experience, but the road ahead for him and the Eels will require patience, dedication, and time.

The Eels’ next opportunity to regain momentum comes against the Tigers in round two, where they will aim to recover from their disheartening start and establish a more competitive footing in the league.
