Queensland coach Billy Slater has indicated that while Raiders player Xavier Savage has the potential to compete in the State of Origin, he still has considerable areas for improvement. After putting in an impressive performance during the Raiders’ opening match of the season against the Warriors, where he scored two tries and made significant contributions with 219 run metres and seven tackle breaks, Slater expressed optimism about Savage’s future.
The 22-year-old Savage has faced challenges in securing a consistent spot within the Canberra Raiders’ lineup since making his debut a few seasons ago. However, Slater noted significant progress in his game, stating that Savage’s hard work and resilience are beginning to pay off. He pointed to comments from Raiders coach Ricky Stuart, who emphasised the importance of mentoring Savage, including times when he was benched to aid his development.
With 26 tries in 48 appearances, Savage is adapting well to his new wing role after initially starting as a dynamic fullback. Although his current standing in the Origin selection hierarchy is modest, Slater remains hopeful that Savage will reach that level as he continues to grow. He encouraged Savage to consider representing Queensland a future goal, acknowledging that while it might not be imminent, it’s certainly within reach.
While Savage’s intercept try showcased his talent, Slater also highlighted the need for greater consistency in his performance, particularly regarding decisions made in crucial moments, such as his attempt to intercept later in the game which led to a Warriors try.
At present, he faces competition from established players like Xavier Coates and Selwyn Cobbo for a wing position at the representative level. Additionally, Savage is likely to miss the Raiders’ upcoming match due to a suspension, which might temporarily pause his momentum. Nonetheless, Slater’s comments underline a belief in the young player’s capabilities and potential for future success on larger stages.
