Andrew Johns has called on Daly Cherry-Evans to clarify his future as his “bizarre” contract situation lingers. The veteran halfback, 36, confirmed earlier this year that he would leave the Sea Eagles at season’s end and intends to continue his career elsewhere. Initially, Cherry-Evans stated he would not determine his plans for 2026 until the conclusion of the State of Origin series, but with that phase now over—he was dropped from the Maroons for a crucial game—he has to make a decision.

Johns expressed frustration at how the contract negotiations have unfolded, describing Cherry-Evans’ recent announcement on a TV show as “an absolute joke.” He urged Cherry-Evans to announce his next destination, emphasising that Manly’s recent signing of Jamal Fogarty leaves little room for him to stay, especially given the club’s plans for partnerships with younger talents, such as Luke Brooks.

Speculation suggests that Cherry-Evans might join the Sydney Roosters. While this would mirror the club’s previous acquisition of Cooper Cronk—who helped them to consecutive premierships—Johns argued that the current Roosters squad is different. With promising young players like Sammy Walker and Hugo Savala rising through the ranks, Johns questioned whether it would benefit the team to have an ageing halfback in Cherry-Evans.

Johns also mentioned the possibility of Cherry-Evans moving to the Dolphins but recognised the challenge of relocating his young family. As Cherry-Evans prepares for a round 15 clash with the Gold Coast Titans, the clock is ticking for him to settle his future, with uncertainty surrounding both his and the Roosters’ plans.
