Andrew Johns has expressed his support for Tom Trbojevic, the injury-plagued Sea Eagles star, considering a move abroad as he contemplates his future. The 28-year-old fullback is set to be off-contract at the end of next season, and speculation suggests he may explore options in the Super League if negotiations with Manly fail.

Having faced numerous injuries throughout his career, Trbojevic has recently been sidelined once again, limiting his appearances for the Sea Eagles. He, alongside his brother Jake, is keen to remain loyal to Manly, which could complicate his potential transfer to England.

During an interview on Wide World of Sports’ Immortal Behaviour, Johns indicated that relocating to the UK could be beneficial for Trbojevic, especially given his lack of family obligations. He emphasised the positive impact Trbojevic’s presence would have on the Super League, advocating for more NRL stars to make the switch. Johns, who played for Warrington during his career, believes this move could serve both Trbojevic and the league well.

Despite the possibility of Trbojevic’s overseas retirement, significant decisions loomed for Manly as the contract renewal deadline of November 1 approaches. His extensive injury history, combined with his substantial salary, has been a limiting factor for the club. Emerging talent Lehi Hopoate has excelled in Trbojevic’s absence, signalling a shift in the team’s dynamics going forward.

Johns noted both Trbojevic brothers desire to finish their careers on the Northern Beaches. He predicts that Manly will offer Tom and Jake short-term extensions, allowing the duo to retire as one-club legends. He highlighted Trbojevic’s limited appearances over his ten-year career, noting that injuries have prevented him from playing to his full potential.

As the Sea Eagles plan for the future, they face a critical juncture with the continued emergence of Hopoate and the impending farewell of captain Daly Cherry-Evans, who is leaving at the season’s end. The club has already secured Raiders halfback Jamal Fogarty as a replacement, set to partner Luke Brooks in the coming seasons.

In light of potential pay cuts for the sake of the team’s success, Johns is confident the Trbojevic brothers would be willing to reduce their salaries to facilitate the club’s long-term goals. As negotiations progress, the Sea Eagles will need to deftly navigate roster changes while honouring their commitment to the Trbojevic legacy.
