Andrew Johns has expressed his desire to maintain the current representative schedule despite the 36 players unavailable for club duties during this week’s Origin camps. Each year, the clubs face the challenges of fielding competitive teams while missing key players who are either on representative duty or unable to play due to injuries or suspensions. Over the years, the absence of these stars has tested many teams, although some have thrived against stronger opponents.

Currently, the competition is fierce, with just four points separating the teams in the top three spots on the ladder. Notably, the Bulldogs, Raiders, and Warriors, currently in contention, are among the least affected by player absences during the 2025 Origin series. The Bulldogs will miss key players Stephen Crichton and Max King, who are with the NSW team, and Kurt Mann, who is the 18th man for the Maroons. The Raiders will also be without Hudson Young as they face the Warriors in Auckland.

The Panthers and Roosters are experiencing significant player losses due to Origin commitments, while the Storm, although having several representatives, benefit from a bye in round 12. The Panthers will also enjoy a bye around the subsequent Origin games.

Johns has commented on the ongoing debate regarding the fairness of the competition draw, particularly as it relates to mid-season representative fixtures. He rejected suggestions for a prolonged break in the NRL season or the introduction of international tests, emphasising that the existing system works well. He suggested that while lower-ranked teams may benefit from fewer players affected by Origin duty, the NRL must consider bye distribution more effectively during this period.

Reflecting on his own experiences with representative responsibilities, Johns highlighted the sense of pride and development players encounter when representing their state. He noted how returning to club play enhances match fitness and emphasised the importance of giving back to club teammates who supported their journey. The Origin series will kick off in Brisbane next Wednesday, setting the stage for more thrilling rugby league action.
