Alexander Volkanovski has expressed that despite lingering doubts about his future in the UFC following back-to-back defeats, he is now more confident than ever in his ability to compete at a high level. The Aussie fighter’s recent setbacks included a knockout loss to Ilia Topuria, which resulted in him losing his featherweight title. This defeat marked the longest break in Volkanovski’s career, but he is set to return to the octagon in April to contest the vacant title against Diego Lopes.
In a recent interview, the 36-year-old revealed that during his time off, he took the opportunity to reflect on his career and age, leading to uncertainties about whether he could maintain his previous performance. However, after a rigorous training period, he rediscovered his capabilities, stating, “I answered those questions with flying colours.” Volkanovski highlighted his commitment to training, diet, and sobriety, enhancing his discipline as he prepares for his comeback.
Initially hopeful of a fight at UFC 312 in Sydney, Volkanovski had to be patient while Topuria contemplated his future. Once Topuria vacated the title, it was confirmed that Volkanovski’s next opponent would be Lopes. Although he had wished for a rematch with Topuria, he expressed that facing Lopes is a fitting opportunity to reclaim a championship.
Lopes, currently on a five-fight winning streak, has performed admirably, but Volkanovski remains confident that he will present a unique challenge that Lopes has yet to encounter, stating, “It’s hard… but I think it’s just been a timing thing.” Volkanovski believes he will demonstrate his superiority in the upcoming bout.
Aside from his fighting career, Volkanovski has been active in various ventures, including a new cooking channel and partnerships aimed at supporting small businesses, notably collaborating with Tyro Payments during a recent event in Bondi. He is making the most of his time away, contributing to community efforts while gearing up for his return.
Volkanovski is set to headline UFC 314 in Miami on April 13 (AEDT), and he is eager to prove to his fans that he remains a formidable competitor in the octagon.
