The AFL is currently investigating an incident where a spectator threw a water bottle during the concluding moments of St Kilda’s match against North Melbourne. This occurred shortly after Saints forward Max Hall was awarded a 50-metre penalty on the final siren, which allowed him to score a goal from the line while a bottle was hurled in his direction.

This latest incident follows a previous event where a 23-year-old fan was permanently banned from attending AFL and AFLW matches after throwing a bottle that struck and injured a goal umpire, causing a significant head injury requiring medical treatment. The individual, previously a member of Carlton, received a lifetime ban for their actions.

In contrast to last year, the recent bottle throw did not make contact with either the goal umpire or Hall, but it was clearly aimed in their vicinity. According to Tom Morris, chief AFL reporter for Nine, the league suspects the individual responsible was affiliated with the North Melbourne cheer squad.

Morris stated that the AFL is looking into the incident and confirmed that police involvement is not necessary at this stage. Furthermore, North Melbourne has been engaged in discussions with the AFL, cooperating in the investigation.

Moreover, an earlier incident in 2025 resulted in another fan receiving a five-year ban for sending threatening messages through the anti-social hotline at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).

The AFL remains committed to maintaining a safe and enjoyable environment for all attendees and will take appropriate action in response to any harmful behaviour exhibited by fans.
