Jack Robinson has surged into the World Surf League (WSL) finals after a spectacular display at the Tahiti Pro, marking a remarkable day for Australian surfing, with compatriot Molly Picklum also solidifying her bid for a world title.
During the final event of the regular season, held at the notorious Teahupo’o reef, Robinson’s exceptional performance saw him climb to fourth in the WSL rankings, keeping his championship aspirations alive while eliminating Ethan Ewing, who dropped to sixth.
To secure his spot among the top five vying for the world title in Fiji later this month, Robinson needed a win in Tahiti—an objective he achieved with flair. His tournament kicked off with a stunning 9.50 on his first wave, setting the tone for an emotional victory celebrated with his wife and son in the water. “I’m right where we’re meant to be,” Robinson expressed. “I had a mission, and I went for it. I’m truly blessed to be going to Fiji. Throughout the event, I just stayed true to myself; I was free.”
The day was equally impressive for 22-year-old Picklum from New South Wales’s Central Coast, who made significant strides towards her first world title. Overcoming reigning champion Caitlin Simmers in the final, Picklum executed a near-perfect performance at Teahupo’o, a site she once feared during the Olympics last year. After her victory, she shared in Robinson’s joy.
“I felt like I earned my stripes this event,” Picklum remarked. “It was incredible, making waves without being wiped out. Tahiti has such a vibrant energy; it truly brings dreams to life. I’m thrilled and can’t wait to head back home, pack some boards—I broke a few here—and enjoy Fiji for what it is.”
Finishing the year ranked No.1 is a significant milestone for her, and she aims to clinch the ultimate prize in Fiji. Both surfers’ achievements at the Tahiti Pro have not only showcased their talent but also injected excitement into Australian surfing as they prepare for the final showdown of the season.
