Jordan Petaia is on the verge of successfully transitioning from rugby union to American football after signing with the Los Angeles Chargers. The 25-year-old confirmed his new position with the Chargers following an impressive stint in the NFL’s international player pathway programme.
Should he take to the field for the Chargers in the upcoming season, Petaia would make history as the first Wallabies player to compete in the NFL. He will play as a tight end, a role he has been primarily training for, although it’s an unconventional path for a former rugby player.
The Chargers highlighted Petaia’s performance during a pro-day event at the University of South Florida in late March as pivotal in their decision to sign him. Expressing his enthusiasm about joining the team, Petaia stated in a video, “I’m excited to be a part of the family. Keen to get stuck in. Bolt up.”
Previously a star with the Queensland Reds, Petaia represented Australia in 31 Test matches but chose to pursue the NFL after the conclusion of the 2023 rugby season. Reflecting on his decision, he remarked, “You can’t stay young forever,” adding that he would have regretted missing out on the opportunity to try American football.
