Raymond Card, a former VFL player, has been sentenced to nine years in prison, with a minimum of four years before parole, following a tragic drunken driving incident that resulted in the death of his partner, Mandy McDonald, and caused significant injuries to a 19-year-old woman. The sentencing took place at Geelong Magistrates’ Court after the fatal crash on November 16, 2024, where Card was found to be four times over the legal alcohol limit and driving on the wrong side of the Geelong Ring Road.
The incident not only claimed McDonald’s life but also left the young woman, a promising volleyball player, with chronic pain and nerve damage, altering her life trajectory permanently. Her father, Peter Macleod, expressed his concerns about the lasting trauma the incident has caused for his daughter, noting the emotional burden feels overwhelming at such a young age. Her mother, Jenny, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the long-term implications of her injuries.
Despite the devastation caused, McDonald’s family displayed compassion towards Card during the court proceedings, weeping in response to his remorse. The judge, Gerard Mullaly, acknowledged a letter of apology from Card, who expressed deep regret for the impact of his actions. He stated, “The time I spend in jail will not compare to your life now, and the loss of the love of my life.” In the immediate aftermath, footage from the scene captured Card admitting to having been drinking before driving, revealing his awareness of his impaired condition.
The young woman’s parents, however, were dissatisfied with the sentencing, deeming it too lenient given the severity of the offence. Peter Macleod called for a stronger message to be sent regarding the consequences of such actions.
Since the accident, Card has been diagnosed with a serious heart condition, reportedly leaving him with a five-year prognosis. His sporting career saw him play for the Geelong Cats from 1977 to 1987, and the community has been left grappling with the fallout of this tragic event, which has left lives forever changed.
