Paul Okon-Engstler, the son of legendary Socceroos player Paul Okon, has received his first call-up to the Australian national team. He joins head coach Tony Popovic’s 26-man squad aiming for automatic qualification for the 2026 World Cup. The 20-year-old midfielder’s selection comes after injuries sidelined experienced players like Jackson Irvine, Nestory Irankunda, and Harry Souttar.
Currently playing for F.C. Benfica in Portugal, Okon-Engstler played a pivotal role in the Young Socceroos’ recent victory at the AFC Under-20 Asian Cup. His strong performance during a recent training camp in the UAE caught Popovic’s attention. Popovic praised Okon-Engstler, noting his outstanding display during the under-20 tournament and emphasising the benefits of his training in Portugal.
In a twist of family fate, Okon-Engstler will be joined by his father at the camp, as the elder Okon serves as an assistant coach with the Socceroos. While Okon-Engstler celebrates his selection, some notable players, including uncapped midfielder Max Balard and striker Kusini Yengi, were not included in this crucial squad. Yengi, who has previous national team experience, has struggled with game time at his club, Portsmouth, which hindered his chances of rejoining the squad.
The Socceroos are gearing up for an important qualifier against Japan, with a win necessary to strengthen their position in the group and enhance their chances of World Cup entry. Currently sitting in third place, Australia needs a victory against Japan, coupled with a Bahrain win over Saudi Arabia, to secure their spot in the World Cup draw. Popovic indicated that while the team is in a good position, the challenge ahead remains significant, especially in facing a strong Japanese side.
Popovic remarked on the need to demonstrate their progress since their last match against Japan and stressed the importance of achieving victory against a top Asian team. He highlighted that to become the best, the team must compete against the best.
The full Socceroos squad for this qualifying phase includes Daniel Arzani, Aziz Behich, Brandon Borrello, and Paul Okon-Engstler among others, all preparing to make their mark as Australia pursues a place in the World Cup.
