Christopher James Finn, a former elite soldier who served in Afghanistan, has been denied bail by the Queensland Supreme Court due to accusations of violating parole in connection with drugs and weapons charges. Finn’s solicitor, Andrew Owens, informed Justice Paul Smith that Finn had been making progress during his parole until a personal loss triggered a relapse into substance abuse.

Finn’s issues began after he experienced trauma during his military service, which led to a diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). He was sentenced to four years in prison in March 2023 after admitting to 38 drug-related offences, culminating in a 14-month spree of criminal activity. His legal troubles intensified in August 2022 when he was apprehended in possession of a loaded revolver.

Despite being released on parole in January 2023, Finn found himself in trouble again when a police raid occurred at a residential unit he was staying in, during which authorities allegedly seized nearly 45 grams of methamphetamine. Finn denied ownership of the drugs and claimed he was not named on the search warrant for the raid. Owens stated Finn had intended to buy drugs for an upcoming party and was battling mental health challenges at the time.

In court, it was revealed that Finn had made efforts to connect with fellow veterans facing similar challenges as a means of support. However, the death of one group member contributed significantly to his downward spiral, leading to his drug relapse. Evidence from Finn’s phone also suggested he was involved in supplying Viagra, adding to the legal ramifications he faced.

Justice Smith acknowledged the tragic nature of Finn’s case but ultimately refused his bail application. He cited concerns regarding the “unacceptable risk” of Finn reoffending while on bail. Furthermore, Smith mentioned that there were no assurances that parole authorities would have permitted Finn to leave custody even if bail had been granted.

Finn’s struggle with mental health and substance abuse highlighted the difficulties many veterans face after returning from service, underlining the importance of support systems for those affected by such experiences.
