Marcus Stoinis, the powerful Australian all-rounder, has officially retired from one-day international (ODI) cricket, effective immediately, just ahead of the Champions Trophy. The 35-year-old had been named in the squad for the 50-over tournament scheduled for February 19 to March 9 in Pakistan and the UAE but made the announcement on Thursday. Despite stepping back from ODIs, he remains available for T20 international selection.
During his ODI career, Stoinis played 71 matches, accumulating 1,495 runs with an average of 26.69, including a highest score of 146 not out. He also claimed 48 wickets, with his best bowling figures being 3 for 16. He earned the accolade of male ODI player of the year at the 2019 Australian Cricket Awards and was part of the team that lifted the 50-over World Cup in India, although he did not play in the final.
Expressing his gratitude, Stoinis remarked on the incredible journey of representing Australia, emphasising his cherished experiences in the green and gold. Sharing his decision wasn’t easy, he highlighted the importance of focusing on the next chapter of his career. Stoinis also acknowledged the support of Australian head coach Andrew McDonald and expressed his enthusiasm for cheering on his teammates in the upcoming tournament.
