The European Union (EU) is keen to strengthen its defence collaborations with Australia, taking into account the current global instability. This proposal was presented to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen during a meeting in Rome, following a mass at the Vatican. She suggested that such a partnership would align with the EU’s existing defence ties with countries like Japan and South Korea.

In light of rising geopolitical tensions, particularly influenced by changing U.S. commitments under the Trump administration, Europe is reassessing its security strategies. Von der Leyen acknowledged that the international security landscape has worsened recently, emphasising that both Australia and Europe share strong values and can provide each other with stability in these uncertain times.

During their discussions, von der Leyen expressed a desire to enhance the strategic partnership between the EU and Australia, akin to those already established with other nations, including security agreements with South Korea, Japan, and soon the UK. She highlighted the significance of viewing Australia not just as a trading partner, but as a strategic ally.

Prime Minister Albanese responded cautiously, indicating the Australian government’s willingness to explore a potential defence partnership, while also noting that discussions are still in their early phases. He reaffirmed Australia’s commitment to continued support for Ukraine amidst its conflict with Russia, including the provision of military aid such as Abrams tanks.

The proposed deepening of defence relations highlights the EU’s intent to forge stronger global alliances amid evolving security challenges and showcases Australia’s strategic importance in international defence matters.
