A scheduled press conference and signing ceremony for a US-Ukraine minerals agreement was abruptly cancelled following former President Trump’s request for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to leave the White House. In a social media update post-departure, Zelenskyy highlighted Ukraine’s pursuit of a “just and lasting peace.”
In response to Zelenskyy’s visit, a strong wave of support emerged online, with French President Emmanuel Macron and Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson among the most vocal supporters. Macron reaffirmed the importance of the West’s support for Ukraine, stating, “We all were right to have helped Ukraine and sanctioned Russia three years ago, and to continue to do so.” He identified Russia as the aggressor and praised those who have been fighting for Ukraine.
Estonia’s Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna also weighed in, attributing the ongoing conflict to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s refusal to halt his aggressive actions. Tsahkna underscored that if Ukraine ceases its fight, there would be no country left, reiterating Estonia’s steadfast support for Ukraine and urging Europe to adequately resource the nation, including using Russia’s frozen assets.
Leaders from Spain, Latvia, Lithuania, Germany, and Poland echoed similar sentiments, showcasing a united front in support of Ukraine. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha commended Zelenskyy for his courage, expressing gratitude for American assistance.
However, opinions within the US were divided. Some Republican lawmakers expressed disappointment regarding the handling of the meeting. Congressman Don Bacon characterised it as “a bad day for America’s foreign policy,” emphasising Ukraine’s aspiration for independence and alignment with Western values. Meanwhile, Congressman Mike Lawler remarked on the fallout from the public nature of the meeting, calling it a “missed opportunity.”
Prior to the Oval Office engagement, Zelenskyy had held discussions with a bipartisan group of senators, including prominent Republicans. Their silence following the Oval Office meeting reflected the contentious atmosphere surrounding the US-Ukraine relationship at that moment.
