A senior European Union official has issued a strong warning to the United States regarding the ongoing trade tensions stirred by President Donald Trump’s impending tariffs on imports. Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, highlighted that the EU possesses considerable leverage in these negotiations and is prepared to retaliate effectively if necessary.
Trump is set to announce tariffs on imports, which he claims will reduce America’s dependence on foreign goods. He is particularly focused on imposing “reciprocal” tariffs to counteract duties levied by other nations, dubbing this initiative “Liberation Day,” scheduled for April 2.
During a discussion with EU lawmakers, von der Leyen insisted that Europe did not instigate this conflict and expressed reluctance towards retaliation. However, she emphasised that the EU is equipped to respond robustly should the situation demand it, stating, “All instruments are on the table.” She asserted that the EU’s market size, technological prowess, and available countermeasures strengthen their position.
In response to Trump’s earlier steel and aluminium tariffs, the EU plans to impose its own duties on approximately $28 billion worth of US goods by mid-April. This will encompass not just steel and aluminium, but also textiles, household appliances, and agricultural products.
While the EU is strategising its response, uncertainty remains about the specifics of how Trump’s tariffs, particularly the “reciprocal” nature, will function. Von der Leyen noted the widespread dismay among Europeans regarding the US’s announcements and highlighted the deep ties between the two entities, describing the EU-US trade relationship as the most significant and prosperous globally. She expressed hope that both sides could resolve the issues constructively for mutual benefit.
