A former employee of an organic café located in Sydney’s inner west is contesting claims for over $11,000 in unpaid wages. Beste Ucak initially took the part-time role to support her aspirations of attending an art school, but after a month, she reported that her payments became irregular.

Despite her hesitance to stir up trouble, Ucak found the deferred wages severely impacted her ability to manage her own financial commitments. As a result of the ongoing disputes, the café, Hillview Fine Foods, is now under investigation by the Australian Financial Complaints Authority.

Ucak’s situation highlights the ongoing challenges faced by workers regarding fair compensation in the hospitality industry.
