Elon Musk, the American tech billionaire, made a surprise appearance via live video at the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party’s campaign launch in Halle, drawing cheers from approximately 4,500 supporters. Musk endorsed the AfD as Germany’s “best hope” ahead of the snap general election on February 23, following the collapse of Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s coalition. The AfD, known for its far-right ideology and anti-immigrant stance, has seen a surge in support, recently becoming the first far-right party to win a state election since the Nazi era.
This endorsement comes amid demonstrations across Germany, with tens of thousands protesting against the AfD, including a significant gathering at Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate. Protestors voiced their opposition through songs and banners, condemning the far-right’s influence.
Musk, who has been forming alliances with the AfD’s leadership, emphasised the importance of national pride and warned against a multiculturalism that he believes diminishes German identity. His involvement has sparked concern among European leaders about foreign influence in domestic politics. Nevertheless, he continues to advocate for populist movements in Europe, asserting that the upcoming election could shape the future of Europe and beyond.
