In a recent taste test, ten popular corn chip brands were evaluated based solely on taste and texture, using only salted varieties to ensure consistency. Surprisingly, the simplest ingredients of corn, oil, and salt led to highly varied experiences.

Best Overall: La Tortilleria Totopos Tortilla Chips (200g, $9.24) scored 9/10 for their excellent crunch and structural integrity, ideal for dips or chilaquiles. Their unique nixtamalisation technique enhances flavour and nutrition without overwhelming saltiness.

Best Value: Sprinters Corn Chips (200g, $2.49) earned 7/10, offering a denser, crunchier texture from 78% corn, with a toasted flavour, although made with a mix of oils.

The other contenders included Feel Good Foods Original Corn Chips (8/10), noted for their sweet aftertaste, and Sonora Foods Salted Corn Chips (7/10), celebrated for their sturdiness. In contrast, CC’s Original Chips (6.5/10) had a strong crunch but an overly salty taste, while Tostitos Lightly Salted (6/10) and Macro Organic Chips (5.5/10) lacked flavour depth. Doritos (5/10) and Mission Strips (5/10) were deemed mediocre, with Old El Paso (4/10) surprisingly failing to impress due to their odd sweetness and unpleasant aftertaste.

Ultimately, while it’s hard to go wrong with corn chips, some clearly stand out in the crowded market.
