The Queensland government has unveiled its plans for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, highlighting a unique opportunity for the state. The Games will not only take place in Brisbane but will also extend to surrounding areas, including the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast, marking a significant event for Queensland.

Victoria Park will serve as the venue for the main stadium, which will be equipped to host a variety of sports and entertainment events. Additionally, the Centenary Pool at Spring Hill will be transformed into a national aquatics centre, featuring over 25,000 seats, to support swimming and related sports. This sports hub is expected to become the permanent headquarters for numerous Olympic and Paralympic sports, ensuring a lasting legacy for Brisbane.

Moreover, the Brisbane Showgrounds are set for enhancements, which include the construction of a 20,000-seat venue and the Brisbane Athlete Village. The Queensland Tennis Centre will also be upgraded, introducing a new 3,000-seat show court and twelve additional match courts, ensuring Brisbane retains its prominence in tennis.

The Games will embrace venues beyond the city’s limits, with the Sunshine Coast hosting the Mountain Bike Centre and recreational activities, while a dedicated whitewater centre will be built in Redland. The Gold Coast will feature an athlete village and host events such as hockey and triathlon competitions.

Queensland Premier David Crisafulli acknowledged that the state faces challenges, including breaking a prior election promise of “no new stadium” due to the need for upgraded facilities. He emphasised that the decision prioritised the interests of Queenslanders over political commitments, stating, “It came down to a choice… Any other choice would have meant placing the government’s political interests ahead of the interests of Queenslanders.”

In addition to the sporting venues, significant infrastructure developments are planned, including a new public transport link, termed “The Wave,” which will connect Brisbane with the Sunshine Coast. As Crisafulli noted, the overarching goal is to deliver not only the Games but also transformative infrastructure for Queensland, laying the groundwork for future generations.

In summary, the upcoming 2032 Games represent a comprehensive plan outlining significant upgrades and developments aimed at promoting sports and fostering economic growth throughout Queensland, enhancing its reputation on the international stage.
