An elderly man is currently in serious condition following an alleged assault by a teenager outside a polling station in Sydney’s Inner West. The incident took place at Ashfield Town Hall on Liverpool Road around 1pm, prompting a swift response from the police.
The 80-year-old victim received immediate medical attention at the scene before being transported to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. Authorities have confirmed that a 17-year-old boy was apprehended at the location of the assault and has since been taken to Burwood Police Station, where he is aiding in the ongoing investigation.
A crime scene has been established as police work to uncover the details surrounding the incident. The Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) has acknowledged awareness of the situation but clarified that the victim was not an electoral staff member. An AEC spokesperson informed 9news.com.au that the altercation occurred outside the polling area and had no repercussions on their election operations, which are continuing as scheduled at the pre-polling centre.
