Dylan Brown has acknowledged that transitioning to the halfback position will be a new experience for him, following his recent 10-year, $14 million contract with the Newcastle Knights. In a candid discussion on Nine’s 100% Footy with Michael Chammas, Brown expressed uncertainty about his fit for the role, stating, "Right now, no I’m not a seven, I’m a six," reflecting his longstanding experience as a five-eighth or No. 6.
The Knights have reportedly signed him with the intention of playing him in the halfback role, but Brown remains confident that the club is willing to accept him as he is. "I’ve always played six up until now… They (the Knights) spoke to me about that," he noted. This contract marks a significant change, especially after facing challenges with player options in his previous deal with the Parramatta Eels. The Eels faced criticism for these exit clauses, which caused complications in his tenure there. Brown assured that his commitment to the Knights is solid, saying, "I’m locked in for 10 years," suggesting that Newcastle is aware of the issues that arose in his former contract.
As he prepares for his new chapter with the Knights next season, Brown admitted he initially preferred to stay with Parramatta. Despite hoping to remain with the Eels, he instructed his agent to explore alternative offers. Ultimately, he chose Newcastle, primarily due to the security of the 10-year deal rather than financial motives. He clarified that while the financial aspects were appealing, the long-term commitment was the key driver of his decision.
In response to previous comments that seemed to downplay his willingness to move, Brown emphasised his clarity with Parramatta about the potential offer from Newcastle. He was transparent about his aspirations and the incentives presented by the Knights. "The vision of the Newcastle Knights is obviously what entertained me more," he explained, reinforcing that while financial benefits played a role, the security of a long-term contract was paramount.
As Brown embarks on this new journey, he will aim to adapt to the challenges of a different playing position while aligning with the Knights’ vision for the future.
