A driver has been charged in connection with an incident in Sydney’s south-west where a police officer was injured during a traffic stop. The accident occurred on The Northern Road at Narellan around 5.30am, when the officer, who was beside his motorcycle, was struck from behind by a Kia Carnival. The impact caused the officer to be thrown approximately 12 metres.

The 42-year-old driver was subjected to a mandatory test, returning a negative breathalyser result. Police have reported that the driver admitted to being distracted at the time of the collision, despite the motorcycle being equipped with multiple high-visibility lights.

The driver faces several charges, including dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm, negligent driving causing grievous bodily harm, and using a mobile phone while driving. He has been granted bail and is scheduled to appear in Picton Local Court on February 27. The injured officer, who is in his 40s and part of the Traffic and Highway Patrol Command, is receiving treatment at Liverpool Hospital for suspected fractures to his hip and knee.
