In a distressing incident in Logan, Queensland, 79-year-old Stanley Parkes narrowly escaped death when two thieves in a stolen SUV ran a red light and collided with his vehicle. The crash occurred in the early evening, with eyewitnesses confirming the stolen Haval was travelling at high speed when it struck Parkes’ car.
Parkes had just left his home to purchase cereal when the accident happened, stating, “If I would’ve been a bit further out, I would’ve been dead, dead as anything.” Fortunately, he survived but was left shaken by the ordeal. The pair responsible for the hit-and-run were seen fleeing the scene without checking on him, leaving many outraged at their callousness.
Witnesses, including Dannelle Lamberth, recalled the moment of impact, describing it as terrifying and noting the wreckage left behind. Parkes emphasised the loss of his car, which he had maintained in good condition, and expressed gratitude that he emerged relatively unscathed.
The community has shown remarkable support for Parkes in the aftermath of the accident, with many donating money to help him purchase a new vehicle. Kristee Heyden, one of the witnesses, remarked, “A little bit of good news out of a really bad sad story,” highlighting the kindness that often emerges from tragedy.
As police continue their investigation, Parkes is publicly appealing for information that could lead to the capture of the thieves, who remain at large. His story serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of life and the compassion that can arise even in dark times.
