A 31-year-old man and his injured horse were successfully rescued by emergency services in central western Queensland after becoming trapped in floodwaters. The incident occurred early in the morning as he was travelling from Blackall to Toowoomba at around 5.30 am, aiming to seek veterinary care for his horse. While driving along the Landsborough Highway near Tambo, he encountered unexpectedly severe flooding and was swept off the road along with his horse float.

In a desperate attempt to stay safe, the man climbed onto the roof of his four-wheel drive vehicle while waiting for help. Emergency personnel from the State Emergency Service (SES) responded quickly and were able to rescue both the man and his horse using a boat. Fortunately, neither sustained any injuries.

Inspector Chris Smith, the Longreach District Disaster Coordinator, used this event to highlight the dangers that come with driving during severe weather conditions. He emphasised the importance of being vigilant, particularly at night when visibility is reduced. Smith warned that even seemingly shallow roads could be hazardous and urged drivers not to take unnecessary risks with their lives or those of rescue teams.

The incident serves as a crucial reminder for all motorists to choose safer, alternative routes during adverse weather to prevent such emergencies.
