England’s captain Jos Buttler has responded to criticism of the team’s preparation following their dismal 3-0 series defeat to India in one-day internationals. The latest loss, by 142 runs in the third ODI, raises concerns for England ahead of the upcoming Champions Trophy. Under the new leadership of Test coach Brendon McCullum, the white-ball squad has begun its stint poorly, following a disappointing 4-1 T20 series defeat.

Prominent cricket figures, including Ravi Shastri and Kevin Pietersen, have questioned whether the players appropriately dedicated time to practice during their tour in India. Pietersen emphasised that while enjoyment is important, players are employed to win matches, not partake in leisure activities like golfing. He expressed disappointment over the perceived lack of seriousness in their preparations.

Despite the criticism, Buttler defended the team’s efforts, stating, “We try to create a really good environment… but don’t mistake that for a lazy environment.” He acknowledged there were occasions when they did not train, yet insisted that they had engaged in adequate practice throughout the tour.

With Shubman Gill scoring a remarkable 112 and India reaching 356, England’s batting faltered as they collapsed for just 214 runs. The team must regroup swiftly as they look to redeem themselves at the Champions Trophy later this month.
