Dolphins halfback Isaiya Katoa continues to impress as one of the NRL’s most thrilling talents, showcasing his skills in a remarkable match against the Dragons. Katoa played a pivotal role in leading the Dolphins to a historical 56-6 victory, marking the team’s largest win to date.
One standout moment occurred 25 minutes into the match, when Katoa executed a brilliant 40/20 kick on the fourth tackle, leaving commentators and fans in awe. Peter Psaltis, calling the game for Nine, exclaimed, “Is there anything this man can’t do? Isaiya Katoa is having a night out!” Billy Slater, the former NRL star, echoed this sentiment, praising Katoa’s maturity and decision-making on the field, particularly for attempting such a strategic kick early in the tackle count.
In addition to his kicking prowess, Katoa demonstrated exceptional playmaking skills. Just two sets later, he assisted in the eighth try for the Dolphins by delivering a perfect cut-out pass to Jake Averillo, who ultimately passed to Jamayne Isaako, extending their lead to 44-2. Darren Lockyer noted the similarities between Katoa’s play and that of veteran halfback Nathan Cleary, highlighting the young player’s impressive kicking, passing, and running abilities.
The Dolphins continued to dominate, with Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow scoring his second try in the 58th minute, taking the score to 50-6. Val Holmes managed to score the Dragons’ lone try shortly after, but the Dolphins’ attack was relentless, capped off by Herbie Farnworth’s late try before full time. The scoring frenzy began with Farnworth opening the match, followed by tries from Isaako, Kodi Nikorima, Connelly Lemuelu, and Jack Bostock in the first half, which ended with the Dolphins comfortably ahead at 28-2.
Despite the heavy loss, Dragons player Val Holmes expressed his disappointment, calling the outcome “embarrassing” and highlighting the team’s lacklustre defence. Former player Sam Thaiday was likewise critical of the Dragons’ performance, labelling their defensive effort as “woeful” during the post-match analysis.
Katoa’s extraordinary performance underscored his potential and left fans excited about what the future holds for him and the Dolphins.
