Recent documents released by Britain’s Special Immigration Appeals Commission have shed light on Prince Andrew’s connections with suspected Chinese spy, Tengbo Yang. These revelations indicate that the prince sought to restore his tarnished reputation following a disastrous 2019 BBC interview.
Dominic Hampshire, a royal aide, provided witness statements that detail his role in facilitating meetings between Prince Andrew and Yang, a Chinese businessman. Initially kept confidential, the statement was made public in response to requests from various news outlets, citing public interest in the matter.
Hampshire noted that, following the infamous Newsnight interview, it became apparent within the royal household that Prince Andrew’s reputation was beyond repair. He emphasised that this sentiment was widespread among royal staff, contrasting with the prince’s own beliefs about his standing. Furthermore, Hampshire indicated that there was a growing consensus about the need to reassess Andrew’s role within the royal family, including the possibility of stepping back from official duties.
Prince Andrew, also known as the Duke of York, has publicly stated that he adhered to government advice by ending all associations with Yang once concerns about the relationship were voiced.
