A 46-year-old anesthesiologist, Gerhardt Konig, was apprehended on Monday in Oahu, Hawaii, following a violent incident involving his wife during a hiking expedition. The Honolulu Police Department reported that Konig attempted to push his wife off the trail before assaulting her with a rock, causing significant injuries to her head and face. The 36-year-old woman was treated and taken to a local emergency room in serious condition.
After a seven-hour manhunt, police arrested Konig near Pali Highway following a brief chase. While charges against him are pending, the prosecuting attorney’s office has not provided any comments as the investigation is ongoing. CNN has sought updates on the victim’s condition from local hospital officials.
In the aftermath of the incident, Konig’s medical licence, which he obtained in September 2022, remains in good standing according to Hawaii’s professional vocational licensing database. However, he has been suspended from his role as an independent contractor at Maui Memorial Medical Center pending further investigation. A representative from Maui Health stated that they are taking the allegations seriously and will fully cooperate with authorities.
Although Konig had previously worked at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, he has not been affiliated with the institution for over two years. Efforts are underway to secure legal representation for him.
