Shergar, the celebrated thoroughbred, was owned by the Aga Khan, a prominent billionaire and spiritual figure to 15 million Ismaili Muslims. Following his abduction, numerous ransom demands were directed to Irish law enforcement; however, the Aga Khan chose not to comply with the kidnappers’ requests. The final communication from the perpetrators claimed, “The horse has had an accident. He’s dead,” before the caller abruptly terminated the call. Tragically, Shergar was never found thereafter.
