A tragic case is currently unfolding in the Brisbane Supreme Court, where Maree Mavis Crabtree, aged 59, is accused of fatally overdosing her 26-year-old son, Jonathan, on July 19, 2017. It is alleged that she concealed prescription medication within a fruit smoothie before administering it to him. Following his death, Crabtree reportedly filed a $125,000 insurance claim.
The prosecution claims this act was not the first: Crabtree was also accused of attempted murder earlier that same year. Jonathan, who had a history of drug misuse, had previously experienced overdoses. During the trial, defence attorney Angus Edwards questioned witnesses about Jonathan’s drug use patterns, citing that he frequently took tramadol but never mentioned using another opioid, oxycodone, which was identified as the cause of his death by pathologists.
Rebekah Millard, who was in a relationship with Jonathan for 18 months, testified about his struggles with substance abuse and his tendency to express feelings of hopelessness. She acknowledged Jonathan’s previous overdose and noted his erratic mood swings—often presenting as joyful in public while experiencing significant emotional distress privately.
The court also heard from neighbours like Vicki Inglis, who recounted conversations with Crabtree prior to Jonathan’s passing. Inglis described Crabtree’s discontent with living conditions, specifically feeling overwhelmed by Jonathan, whom she described as having “the brain capacity of a six-year-old” following a car accident in 2015 that left him with permanent injuries.
Witnesses have alleged that Crabtree had made comments about giving Jonathan drugs to harm him, raising further concerns regarding her intentions. The trial continues, with Justice Martin Burns presiding over the case and a number of additional witnesses scheduled to testify in the ensuing weeks.
This chilling narrative, steeped in family tragedy and allegations of premeditated harm, sheds light on the deep-seated issues surrounding addiction and the desperate lengths to which some may go when grappling with familial relationships strained by such challenges.
