Senior players at the Brisbane Broncos influenced the decision to exclude young winger Josiah Karapani from the squad following an off-field incident over the weekend. The 24-year-old celebrated the team’s victory against the Dolphins on Friday night but faced an altercation with police early Saturday in Fortitude Valley. This incident prompted a referral to the NRL’s integrity unit, leading to Karapani being dropped for the upcoming match against Gold Coast in round five.

Club captain Adam Reynolds revealed that the leadership group deliberated on the matter before informing coach Michael Maguire on Monday. Reynolds expressed disappointment over the situation, noting that Karapani fell short of the team’s standards. He stated, “He knows he made an error and is very apologetic. It’s unfortunate, but maintaining our team culture is paramount, and the decision had to be made.”

Reynolds acknowledged the importance of the culture within the team, highlighting that while the situation is regrettable, it serves as a lesson for Karapani. He assured that the young player understands his mistakes and is genuinely remorseful.

Veteran playmaker Ben Hunt echoed this sentiment, supporting Karapani’s potential to reclaim his spot in the team. “He knows he made a mistake, and we’ve discussed it. We believe it’s best for him not to play this week as part of his punishment,” Hunt stated. He portrayed Karapani as a diligent player, mentioning that he is putting in the effort during training and is likely to return to the team.

Despite the setback, the Broncos are regrouping after starting the season with two losses, having recently secured back-to-back wins. They are gearing up to face the Titans on Saturday, with hopes of achieving a third consecutive victory. In Karapani’s absence, Kiwi winger Jesse Arthars has been named to take his place in the starting lineup.

Overall, the Broncos are keen to maintain their focus on building a strong team culture while supporting Karapani in his journey to rectify his missteps.
