Melbourne Demons player Clayton Oliver is bracing for potential trade discussions as he meets with new coach Steven King. Despite being under contract until 2030 with an annual salary of $1.7 million, Oliver has faced challenges in recent seasons related to mental health and off-field issues, which have affected his performance. This year, he made 22 appearances for the Demons but has yet to return to the form that earned him four best and fairest awards.
According to AFL’s lead reporter Tom Morris, Oliver is feeling disheartened about being once again in the spotlight for trade speculation. The Demons previously refused to trade him during the 2023 trade period, and interest has waned following a less-than-stellar season in 2024.
Currently, there are indications that the club is seeking changes under King, who has also signalled that premiership defender Steven May may need to explore his options despite his contract running until 2026. While former Essendon captain James Hird suggested that trading Oliver could be complex due to his hefty wages, he noted that clubs like the Adelaide Crows might find value in his skills, particularly if he addresses his off-field challenges.
The Crows are also reportedly eyeing fellow Melbourne star Christian Petracca, who is exploring trade opportunities with both Adelaide and Gold Coast. Petracca recently met with the Suns and has already held discussions with the Crows. King has expressed a desire for Petracca to remain with the Demons, stating he has had discussions with him about the future. However, he acknowledged that any potential trade would need to be advantageous for Melbourne, given Petracca’s existing contract until 2029.
In the wake of a tumultuous coaching change, with King stepping in after Simon Goodwin’s dismissal, he aims to foster a new direction for the team. King has made it clear that he intends to support players like Petracca while also being open to bringing in younger talent. He mentioned that discussions with May regarding his future have taken place, though the call to consider trading him was made prior to his arrival at the club.
As Melbourne looks to re-establish itself while navigating these heavy trade discussions and potential roster changes, the futures of both Oliver and Petracca hang in the balance, with many eyes watching to see how the situation unfolds.
