George Santos is making a case for leniency ahead of his sentencing for fraud charges. The former New York congressman, who has recently faced intense scrutiny and backlash, expressed his remorse in a letter to a federal judge, emphasising, “I am responsible” for his actions, following a guilty plea last summer. Despite this admission, he termed the seven-year prison sentence sought by prosecutors as “ridiculous” and excessively punitive.

In his lengthy correspondence before the scheduled court appearance, Santos contended that publicly disputing the severity of the sentence does not imply a lack of accountability. He defended his recent social media activity, including controversial remarks directed at the US Department of Justice, asserting that these were unjustly twisted by prosecutors to portray him as unremorseful. Santos claimed his so-called “colourful” posts have been misrepresented, arguing that candid criticism of his sentencing should not be mistaken for a denial of guilt.

Prosecutors, however, have described Santos as “unrepentant,” highlighting his social media comments which suggested he was a victim of prosecutorial overreach, thus undermining his claims of remorse. They alleged that his attempts to downplay his role in the financial fraud he committed during his congressional campaign, where he admitted to deceiving donors and misusing identities, further illustrate a lack of genuine contrition.

Santos mentioned in his letter that he views himself as a “scapegoat,” pointing to the shared culpability of his former campaign treasurer, who has also pleaded guilty. He refuted claims that he has been remiss in addressing the approximately $580,000 he owes as part of his plea deal, insisting he has taken steps to liquidate personal assets and cut down his living expenses to meet his obligations.

Despite his legal troubles, Santos stated that he has not solicited letters of support from friends or family, expressing a desire to handle his situation independently and without dragging others into his legal issues. He acknowledged that shame prevents his supporters from attending his sentencing.

Having been elected in 2022 to represent parts of Queens and Long Island, Santos’s tenure was short-lived; he was expelled from Congress in under a year due to the revelations about his fabricated past and dubious financial dealings. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York, which is handling the case, has refrained from comment. Santos awaits his fate as he continues to grapple with the consequences of his actions.
