A former NSW MP has been jailed following his conviction for the sexual assault of two young men. Gareth Ward, 44, who represented Kiama, was found guilty of one count of sexual intercourse without consent and three counts of indecent assault by a jury in July.

On Wednesday, Judge Kara Shead ordered Ward’s immediate imprisonment pending sentencing. His defence counsel expressed concerns for Ward’s safety in prison due to his high-profile status and the nature of his offences, but the judge indicated that protective measures could be implemented if necessary. Despite his requests for bail on medical grounds due to poor vision resulting from oculocutaneous albinism, the judge declined the application.

Ward’s criminal offences date back to 2013, when he invited an intoxicated 18-year-old man to his home, where he proceeded to sexually assault him multiple times despite the victim’s resistance. Another offence occurred two years later when Ward assaulted a 24-year-old political staffer after a parliamentary function, again disregarding the victim’s protests.

Following the verdict, NSW Premier Chris Minns called for Ward’s immediate resignation, referring to it as “ridiculous” for him to remain in office amid such serious allegations. The Premier also noted legal advice indicating that Ward could be expelled from parliament if necessary.

Ward has served the Kiama electorate since 2011, successfully winning three elections under the Liberal party before becoming an independent in the 2023 elections. Although he has been convicted, he still has the option to appeal his convictions before sentencing occurs.
